All is well

Allen is home from Iraq and all is well on the home front.
I got a new phone so I have been busy learning how to use it.

Next month I go for my check up with my Oncologist.   I feel pretty good with just a few lingering side effect.

My Onc  (yes he is handsome)

Happy Friday everyone, hope it is a wonderful weekend for you

Another week

The weeks are flying by.
Allens trip home got delayed - by a week.  I was bummed about that, but I know where he is working there are lots of work issues going on.  But I will be so glad to see him.

Gracie has been busy with school - her courses are tough and she has been studing hard.   I have seen her grow up so much these last few months.

Me...well I got my last fill today, the results are totally awesome if I say so myself.   I will go back the first of December to to check every thing and make any adjustments.  Then the swap out surgery on the 17th.   Merry Christmas to me.

Health wise - I am having quite a bit of neurapthy in my hands and feet, it comes and goes, but I am ready for it to go.  When I did my lab work and upper GI test this month they found all my numbers were off/bad and I had severe acid reflux, who knew.   So anyway  I am now on 5 different medications to get everything under control and back to normal.  My doctor tells me this is normal for some one coming off chemo and steriods.  But 5 prescriptions is alot.  I would like to get it down to one, just my oral chemo, which I HAVE to take for 10 more years.

It is hard to believe that a year ago I was starting chemo and here today I am almost done with reconstruction.   My hair is dark brown and very curly, it is a whole new me for sure.  I still remember those dark days and every now and then I wonder if I am truly still cancer free.

I am invited to a WHIT HR reunion this weekend in New Orleans and I am really looking forward to seeing all of my former HR  coworkers.   The new company pretty much got rid of every one in WHIT HR, they wanted there own HR dept, so all of us have lots of catching up to do.  We all worked together for 18+ years so that is like family for most of us.

I have started to look at other HR jobs or jobs I may be interested in. I did take 2 civil serivce exams and passed them both, so maybe that will help.

But I really am enjoying this time and moving own with this wonderful life, I truly enjoy the little things and I learning to slow down just a bit.

Happy Fall -
Oh and here is my new favorite fall recipe

Pumpkin Crunch
1-15 oz. can pumpkin
1 cup evaporated fat free milk
1 cup sugar  (I use brown sugar - but you can use white)
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 butter flavor yellow cake mix (super moist Betty Crocker)
1 cup chopped nuts (I use Pecans)
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted

Stir together first five ingredients. Pour into 9x13 lightly greased dish. Sprinkle cake mix evenly over pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle pecans evenly over cake mixture. Drizzle melted butter evenly over pecans. Bake 350 for 1 hour or 1 hour, 5 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Top with whipped cream and nutmeg.

You can also sprinkle dark chocolate chips on top.
This is better than pumpkin or pecan pit !

Streams in the Desert

From Streams In The Desert : "I walked a mile with Pleasure, She chatted all the way; But left me none the wiser for all she had to say. I walked a mile with Sorrow, and ne'er a word said she; But, oh, the things I learned from her when sorrow walked with me."

Robin Roberts posted this on FB and I thought how true it is and how much you learn when you go thru something like this.

I continue to learn so much on this journey, especially when it comes to true friendship and love.  Just a shout out to all of my friends who have been with me since day one of this journey.   So many of you are still with me today and helping me, pushing me along and keeping me positive.

(((much love))) to all of you.

And time for a happy pic

My Trixie is ready for the holidays.

Another Day, Another Fill

I got another fill today - only 60 ccs this time.  I go back in two weeks for my final fill.  WHOO HOO !

Then the wait ! You need to have two months to heal before you swap out.     My swap out surgery is scheduled for Dec 17th !   Merry Christmas to me.

The results are looking great and I am pleased.  I take that back ..............the results ARE AWESOME....I love them...my scars are almost gone and I am perky and round.  Sorry if I am bragging, but hey I deserve these after all I went thru !

For those of you who do not know what a fill is (TMI ALERT) - it is when they inject my expanders aka  temp boobs with saline.  This is not for the weak of heart, the needle is LARGE  and it looks like a mini plunger....but the thing is - you feel a small stick, then nothing....until hours later when your muscles go into a spasm.  Sort of like a hard work  out at the gym that hits you the next day.   But it only lasts for a day or two.

Right now I am trying my best to sleep on my back (I am side sleeper) - because when I sleep on my side the expander edge digs in and it really hurts the next day.  Yes expanders hurt ...they are hard as rocks...but this will all change when I swap out in Dec.  But I am loving the results and that is what counts.

I am starting to think about work again....and what I want to do.
I will ponder that and get back to you.

Call me Dolly

I got another fill and this one hurt like hell......can you say stretch !
But the pain went away and my results look great so far.  I am so glad I decided to do this even if this recon is not for sissys !

What have I been doing ?   A little of this and a little of that....trying to power walk every day for 30-45 minutes weather permitting and doing things around the house that I have put off for the last 18 years.

My sweet hubby went back overseas for work and I miss him so much.  He really was a great support for me this last month.   I have been driving his jeep while he is gone - and really enjoying it (sorry hun).  I hope to update my blog more while he is gone.

I also found a great recipe for  bread - yum...I have never been a baker before - so this was a surprise to me that it turned out to be delish and tonight I am cooking dinner for my SIL Judy who is going through a rough time.

AND

Please continue to keep my brother Brian in your prayers

I try to call him every few days -I found this online and thought it may be helpful for some of my readers

What to say to some one who is ill or in pain:

When people we care about are in pain, we want to offer words of encouragement, help ease their pain and motivate them to stay hopeful.
Unfortunately, our words of cheer can often be misinterpreted by those who live with chronic illness. Rather than feeling supported, our words can evoke the feeling of "she doesn't understand my life at all." This can permanently affect our relationships.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when talking to a friend living with an invisible illness.

What not to say:

You look so good!

Although this seems like a compliment, it's frustrating to an ill person. Although he or she may wish to look better than they feel, it seems as though you are saying, "You can't really be sick. You look fine to me." It invalidates a person's pain and symptoms.

You need to just stop thinking about it and get busy.

True chronic illness doesn't heal itself because of distraction. Although some people may dwell on the details of their illness, it can seem emotionally overwhelming when your life revolves around new symptoms, medication side effects, infections from a lowered immune system and the illness itself. He or she would likely love to do something fun, but fatigue and pain prevent it.

You should try this new health supplement. It can't hurt.

Actually, the supplement may be the exact opposite of what our body needs, and "natural" doesn't always mean "safe." People have good intentions, but the chronically ill are doing their best to navigate the road of Western medicine, alternative treatments and finding the best medical team.

I wish I had the luxury of being sick instead of having to go to work every day.

Most people want to be able to work, and being physically unable to do so can cause great depression. Those with illness realize they don't have the burden of getting up and going to work each day, but they also have medical bills that they may never be able to pay off, as well as fears of not being able to support themselves.

They don't have as much free time as you think. The medical appointments, pain and paperwork take a large portion of time.

Don't give in. You need to fight this illness.

Those who are ill are fighting their illness every day they wake up and get our of bed. And on the days they can't get out of bed, they are determined to still have a life that is full of joys and memories, special events and loved ones. By taking medication or trying a new therapy, they are not "giving in."

Illness is caused by stress. You just need to learn to cope better.

While illness can be exaggerated by stress, stress rarely is the source of the genetics that cause illness. Those living with an illness are doing the very best they can to cope, but comments like the ones above make them, well, stressed.

Here are some ideas on what to say:

I don't know what to say, but I care about you.

You don't have to try to fix it, and instead of saying, "I know exactly how you feel," an ill person would love it if you would just admit, "I don't have any idea what you are going through, but I am here if you need to vent."

Sometimes we just need one person who will listen and then we can move on to other topics.

If you need to cry, I've got plenty of tissues.

Every now and then we just need a good cry. Between the emotions certain medications cause, plus the stress on our marriages, careers and more, we occasionally need to cry.

Instead of being one more person who says, "Don't cry," tell your friend you will sit with her while she cries. It is an intimate gift that only true friends will offer.

I'm bringing dinner Thursday. Can you eat lasagna or chicken?

People who are chronically ill rarely have anyone bring them a meal or take their kids for a play date. Since moms and dads with illness do their best to keep up with life, they are seen out and about and they "look just fine." But you may never know how much they suffer silently in their home.

A meal for the family or babysitting the kids so parents can have a date night is a great way to provide support.

I am going to the store tomorrow. What can I get for you?

If you are running some errands, let your friend know in advance so he or she can write a short list. Being able to pick up heavy things can also be helpful, like a gallon of milk or laundry detergent. Bring them into the house and ask if you can put them away.

You are going through so much, yet you still have such joy. How do you do that?

If you see a friend who is coping well with his or her physical limitations, ask yourself what you could learn.

Rather than saying, "Thank goodness that isn't me; I could never do that," ask them what motivates them when they are in pain, or how they prioritize to make the most of limited energy. Where do they find hope when the circumstances look bleak?

Those who live with illness learn a lot about the ups and down in life and would love the opportunity to share the wisdom they have discovered.

I am getting there !

Went in for my first office fill today.  Whooo hoooo....

I have to admit I was worried - I think I have been reading to much info on the internet about how painfull this is...

The doc gave me 100cc fill...I did not feel the needle and the fill made my back hurt some ...but I am growing....the results look great.  I am very relieved.  Right now I have WONDER  boobs...hard as rocks !
They will soften out with time and when I do the implant exchange later this year.

I think I will go to Vinny in NOLA to get my tats as well   (google Vinny 3D  breast tattos)

Pain is relevant to me now.

Anyway my hubby made an observation that I need to share.   For years he has been begging me to get my ears pierced ..I have a pair of diamond earing wating for me if I do this....... and I always put it off.....I know how much it hurts and the healing.  He said with all you have had to go thru in the last year I find it funny you are afraid to get your ears pierced.

Needles dont scare me unless they are going in my ear lobes. (shudder)

What I am doing !

Most of my work friends ask me what I have been doing with my time.  When I am not going to doctor apointments this is a list of what I have done:

Clean and rearrange my large butlers pantry - a two day job - it looks amazing now btw.
Clean on various kitchen cabinets
Clean my guest room/move furniture - change linens...ready for company !
Clean (really clean) Gracies room and bathroom
Shop with my daughter for school stuff
Clean out my closet/drawers
Clean my living room and dining room
Buy new lamp and door matt - this took all day as I like to look for just the right piece
Brought various items to goodwill - ongoing
Made homemade dog treats for Trixie !
Send all my wigs/scarves/hats to a friend and Miles Perrett Cancer center

Things still on my to do list:
Refinish Desk ***** this is high on my list but I am waiting till it gets cool so I can do it in the garage)
Clean on linen closet
Clean out a few drawers in kitchen
Clean out garage and outside storage (will wait till it gets cooler)
Clean out front flower beds - I may pay some one to finish this. To hot and to many wasps and biting bugs.
Clean out chest with all my parents photos/paperwork - mail to various siblings and relatives.
Throw out old pots and dried up plants in the back of my house.
Clean Allens office - I think I need an atomic bomb for this

Of course I have been having fun with Gracie and enjoying time with her that I never had before...what a blessing that has been.

Allen has been on days off for four weeks, so it has been nice to hang out with him.  We never had that relaxing kind of time before...and it has been nice.   We have done quite a bit of cooking...so my freezer is full to the brim.  He is leaving in a few more weeks so I will time to get some more things done.  But I will really miss him as I have gotten used to having breakfest and not having to rush off to work.  It is the little things for sure.

Medically - I feel better every day - I have to be careful not to overdo as my chest muscles will pay for it...looking forward to a 2nd fill on Wednesday and hope that the pain will be minimal.
I am also going in for an upper GI test on Monday....mostly because of the cancer gene in my family and the fact the all the meds I have to take have really messed with me.

Say a few prayers for my brother Brian - he is fighting stomach cancer and the chemo is really kicking him.

So that is what I have been doing...

I am healing

It has been 4 weeks since I left work.   I must say the rest/no stress has done wonders for me.

My neuropathy is almost gone with the wind.  I am loving it.   It does show me what stress does to you when you are trying to heal.  I really should have taken a long medical leave while I was doing chemo.     I think by working it took a toll on my health.     There are days when I  sleep 10 hours.   My body needs it.  I am lucky to be able to sleep with out drugs.     I can say I am healing.

I dont miss the work, but I do miss my Whit friends.  The Whitney I knew is gone, and I was very lucky to get the good package from Hancock so that  I can  heal and get my reconstruction.

Speaking of recon...it is not for sissys.  It has been painful I will not lie.   But what is pain, it is all relative when you think of what I have been thru this past year
Tissue expanders feel like concrete blocks with hard edges.  When you move the edges dig into your muscle sending them into spasms. They give you meds for that, but really you dont need them.  I find it if do not over do it (lifting, bending, stretching) - that I dont need the meds. I love the results so far and that keeps me going, seeing the end in sight.

Allen has been home and it has been great to spend time together.  People ask me what have you been doing all this time.  It is hard to say, but shopping, cooking, reading,  and really just enjoying the small stuff that I never had time for while I was working.

It is a raining Saturday morning and I am enjoying a nice cup of coffee, no place to go or errands to run as I was able to do all those during the week.  Nice,

I know I will have to go back to work sooner or later - but it is nice to take the time to heal.

1 YEAR

One year ago today I heard the words - you have cancer ! I had to recreate myself on so many levels, physically, emotionally, spiritually. I have a new hair do, new body, and soon to be a new job ! A heartfelt thank you to all my family and friends who got me to were I stand today. ♥ I could not have done it with out you. You life can change in an instant ! Count your blessing every day !

There are to many people to thank personally - but thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I love you all.

I am healing well from the recon surgery and go in for my 2nd fill in another week,   What a journey it has been !

Recon Part FOUR

Well I got the drains out today, doc said I was healing well and to lay low for the next few days...so the drain holes can heal...then in two weeks I get another fill - whoo hoo ! I am on the way.  He said I was doing well...I do feel great except for a little tired.  BUT I am loving the results so far...and I am wearing a sports bra again and it looks good.........so will continue to keep you updated.

I have been cooking quite a bit since it is the one thing I can do right now.  Tonight is chicken penne with sundried tomatoes and portebello mushrooms....I will post the recipe if it turns out.

Gracie and Allen have been great about doing all the heavy duty stuff (vaccum and laundry etc) - so I think that helps with the healing to.

I have really enjoyed being home with both of them the last two week and I have been able to spend some qaulity time with both of them... The stress edge has been taken off.

My good friends at Whit have been calling and texting, that helps to and makes me feel good (and missed)

I got my hair cut and colored Saturday - that was a big pick me up and I am feeling good about the new look.  I am not blonde anymore...so it is taking some getting used to !  I will post a pic as soon as I get one.

Recon 101 part 3

Well I am stuck with the drains for another week.   Arrrggggghhhh

They wont pull them untill the are draining less than 20ml in 24 hours.   I am about 35 ml.  I go back Tuesday for another look see - but I honestly have not seen a decrease yet.  UGH.  Iam so ready for them to come out...as the drains are really not comfortable.

I am running out of flowing clothes to wear and I am getting cabin fever.  I have to admit, I am a little bored.   I have been looking at jobs to see what is "out there"...but I know I need to finish the healing process with the reconstruction.

You can only watch so much TV and I cant do any lifting or bending etc yet.  So it is not like I can cook or organize or do anything useful around the house.   Thank goodness for my pc and a few games to pass the time.

The results look great so far, so I am getting excited about the whole process.

On Sunday I am going to get a little trim and color (maybe) for my hair - surely that will lift my spirts.

I had to go off my diet during the recovery process, but should be able to start again next week or the week after.

Hope every one has a great weekend....take time to hug your loved ones and let them know how much they mean to you.

Recon 101 - Part 2

What a difference a few days can make.   I am feeling much better today and the pain is gone.  I still have muscle spasms if I try to do to much.  I have trouble sleeping because I have to sleep on my back, but small price to pay in all this.

I go back to Dr Delatte (my plastic surgeon)  on Tuesday - I am hoping he can pull my drains at that time.    I have to say I am very pleased with the results so far, and this is just the beginning.   So I am really looking forward to the final results.

Allen made it home from Iraq and I am looking forward to spending some time with him.

A very good friend and former coworker of mine passed away this week.  She was in her mid 40s and just a beautiful soul, inside and out.  They think it was a heart attack.  Rest in peace sweet Collette, so many people will miss you.  Another reason to take this day and make it wonderful.  Every day is a gift to us and we never know when we will go home.  Life is short - we need to enjoy !

More updates in a few days !

Recon 101 - part one

I will be blogging about my recon surgery.

First and foremost - this is no a surgery for sissys.
I would rather take 4 rounds of the red devil chemo than this.

I went in yeaterday...the doc comes in and marks me up.
I told him I want round and perky...he says we can do that...sort of like ordering off a menu.
Surgery is about two hours..

When I get out of surgery they go back and forth as to should I stay overnight or should I go home as the pain was pushing me over the edge and I was passing out. My right side is really hurting  and I feel like a have big square metal plates in my chest...that is what tissue expaders are. From what I can tell I have A cups right now, as they gave me a fill during surgery.  Once I heal I will go back to his office for another fill...I will continue to do this untill I am at my desired size - then will schedule another surgery to swap our the expanders and put in implants...but this is still a ways off...anywhere from 5 -10 months.

Finally I get  the release to go home...my mind can only concentrate on not throwing up from the pain.

I did manage to sleep last night but is a drug induced sleep.  I wake up this morning to horrible muscle pain.  I cant stand up my myself and it is all I can do to feed myself...yes it is that bad.  Everything is in super slow motion.

Gracie has been taking care of me....and I could not do this with out her.

Go on take the money and run

Go on take the money and run !!!!

Whoo hoooooo – got my "early retirement"   package and I am happy J

Yes Happy ! I need some time to recoup from the past year and just catch up…this gives me the chance to really work on getting my health back.

As you might have guessed from a few of my previous posts I knew this was coming for awhile. No shock or sadness here. Working in HR tends to keep you in the loop on these sort of things, plus I have friends in high (as opposed to low) places !

Yes it is hard to leave after 18 years…but it was time. My work here is done as they old saying goes.

I leave the Whit – but not my Whit family, I have some great friends here, friends who literally carried me thru my illness and kept me floating, I will never forget that.

Whit was a great place to grow up !

It also feels good to know that on Monday night I sent my resume out to a few HR friends to let them know I would be looking for a new job in the near future and Tuesday I had a phone interview ! Divine intervention at work again. I put it all in his hands and follow the path.

BUT As most of you know I go in for my recon surgery on Tuesday and I really need to take some time off to recover from it…so I don’t know if the timing is right for this one.

Life rolls on….and so do I – keep rolling with the punches.

*&^%$# cancer

My youngest brother was diagnosed with cancer this week...I encouraged him to be open and reach out for support as I understand the importance of this during a fight for your life.

Brian - you will always be my hero and the strong one, I know you can fight this....dont ever give up....I love you

Here is the letter my brother wrote to his friends :

Dear Friends and Relatives,
As some of you have already heard, in the last 3 weeks I went from going to my doctor with a persistent, uncomfortable belly ache to being diagnosed with stomach cancer. After lab work and a CAT scan last week, yesterday they did a lower intestine colonoscopy (all clear) and an upper GI endoscope check. My doctor found several small tumors in a group in my upper stomach. I have the most common type of stomach cancer (Gastric Adencarcinoma). I’m not in any great pain, but very bloated and very uncomfortable.

I can only eat small amounts of food without onset of nausea. If I over eat, it feels like I chowed down 2 Thanksgiving dinners non-stop !!

It is a late stage diagnosis (stage3/4), which my Doctor says is common for most stomach cancers since they don’t present early symptoms, and are not checked preventively like colon, prostate or breast cancer. My tumor had already gone through the wall of my stomach and was leaking cancer cell fluid into my abdomen (found last week in a parcenthesis-sp?....a long, ugly needle stuck in belly).

Today, I just got back from my Oncologist who I really like. He is only 5 min from my home. I go in next Thurs to St Elizabeth’s Hospital radiology for a heart scan so they know I’m strong enough for chemo, then again Friday for a porta-cath med-port insertion in my chest. Then I start chemo treatments Mon 30 July. Surgery and radiation are unlikely at this time I’m told.

Wonder how I’ll look and feel…… bald and vomiting. Oh freaking joy!

Thanks to all of you who have sent along your well wishes. I appreciate your support and prayers,

Brian Philipp

Another note:
A good friend of ours passed away last night....Rest in Peace Chris Guidry.
She fought for six months against lung cancer. My heart goes out to her son Zach who went to school with Gracie.

I am so tired of cancer....we must find a cure.  We must.

Ding Dong the wig is dead

Ding Dong the wig is dead !  The wicked wig !

Haha – got my hair cut yesterday, very very short boy cut for now and very dark (I miss my blonde).
Blondes have more fun....I cant wait to be blonde again, but that will be a few more months !

But no GRAY so I am happy about that. I will be highlighting it when it gets longer

I have not done away with the wig – yet. I am close to it however. I still wear it to work, but I am almost over that…I suspect one day I will wake up and say “forget about it” and be done with that. It is so freaking hot and itchy during the summer. My sister in law and I went out to dinner last week and I went wigless and no one looked at me funny…..:)
I wonder if people can tell by looking at me that I had cancer...or it is just a bad hair day !

I think I know that once I go without it,   there is no turning back…so right time and the right place is what I am talking about.

I went to my pre-op today for my surgery on the 24th. I can’t wait to have my reconstruction….yes I am SCARED ! Really Scared. I know it will hurt and it is not an easy surgery ! BUT

I think I can I think I can I think I can….stay positive and stay strong.

Did I tell you I am on a lean and green diet ? I have lost weight….all part of my master plan for getting my health back. I am still sleeping a whole bunch and I am still fighting fatigue …but at least for the most part I am sleeping well…so I am glad about that.

The new meds have helped counter the side effects of Tamox – but not without a few side effects of their own….live and learn.

Work is stressful so that has its impact as well. I expect the next few weeks will bring some changes for me in that regard so stay tuned ! I did teach all of my classes this month and the students/employees gave me very high marks so I feel really good about that. And I was able to stand for 4 hours while teaching. I pushed myself…and I did it.  I pay for it later and I am totally wiped out and sleep for 10 hours after a day like that.

BUT

Every day I try to wake up in the right frame of mind and put a smile on my face and remind myself at how far I have come.

Time will tell

Writer's block.
"Cancered-out."*
Waiting for the next shoe to drop, medical or otherwise. ....
Nothing to say.
Given all of the above.....I could blog about it now, but it is a little premature.

I have got some serious stuff going on right now that I just dont know how to write about it.
But I will.

In time.....

Otherwise is a big clue !

PS....I saw Robin Roberts on TV while waiting in my doctors office today....She had a big smile on her face...but I could already see her illness taking its toll on her.  What a role model she is.

I did see a new doctor today....one who is a cancer survivor.  I felt a BOND.....he gets it - he gets me and what I am going through right now !

Life moves on

Life moves on and so do I !
I have been really struggling at work..............the fatigue is overwhelming along with the side effects from the Tamox.   I have to teach a class next month...this means standing for about 3 hours more or less...I told my boss I did not think I could stand the whole time.....sigh !!!  I have to bring them a note from my doctor...........sigh.   Ok !  moving on !

Happy Birthday to me !!!  The first phase of my  recon surgery is scheduled for July 24.  My birthday.

I am happy, scared, overwhelmed and a mix of emotions over this.
I am trying not to read all the horror stories on the internet (The pain, the pain)
I keep telling myself, no one writes about the good stories right ?
I hope to have new "boobs" by Christmas !

Good Things from Chemo:  my skin looked the best it has in many years; I learned I could not eat  and not starve; I found out how much people in my life cared about me; I got a lot better at applying makeup; I found out that I'm tougher than I thought I was.
Bad Things from Chemo: everything else.

They forget to tell me that I will suffer from the side effects of chemo for months (years ?) after.
Look at Robin Roberts...five years later...chemo screwed with her and it took five years to catch up !

I don't know if or when I'll get past stressing over every new test or wondering if every new symptom is cancer, but I'm hoping I will. Right now, I'm thankful to be alive and don't have to wear a wig :)
My hair is coming back dark and curly !!!  I was going to color it blonde, but I think I will wait a bit...it is kinda growing on me ...in more ways than one.

A good read from CNN

Are we prepared for 18 million cancer survivors?

An estimated 13.7 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2012, according to a new report from the American Cancer Society (ACS) in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute. Researchers expect the number of cancer survivors to rise to 18 million by 2022.
The report, published Thursday, says currently one in three women and one in two men in the U.S. will develop cancer during their lifetime.
“Increases in the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer each year, due in large part to aging and growth of the population, as well as improving survival rates, have led to an ever-increasing number of cancer survivors," the authors of the report write.

For example, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer improved from 75.1% in 1977 to 90% in 2007. And 5-year survival rates for childhood cancers are at 82.5%, an increase of more than 24% since the mid-1970s. Nearly half of all cancer survivors are 70 years or older.
Unfortunately, doctors may not be prepared to deal with the problems cancer survivors face.
"More can certainly be done [in terms] of what the needs are and how they can best be met," study author and ACS epidemiologist Carol DeSantis said. "ACS assesses the gaps in resources and finds ways to fulfill those needs."
Long-term effects from the treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation, and from the cancer itself can be debilitating. For example, cancer survivors like Robin Roberts, can face blood disorders years after they go into remission. Others deal with osteoporosis from the damage chemotherapy inflicts on a body's bone marrow.
Treatment can also cause cardiovascular problems, cognitive defects and muscle pain.
Just as pressing may be the psychological effects for patients who fear the recurrence of their cancer, or who realize the higher risk of being diagnosed with a secondary cancer.
“Survivors are relieved to have completed treatment, but may need to make physical, emotional, social, and spiritual adjustments to find a 'new normal,'" the authors write

UPDATES UPDATES

Sorry I have been MIA....but between work, graduation, work and more work I have been busy and tired.   I am really struggling with extreme fatigue and trying to balance my new position at my old job.  I am on the road quite a bit with my new job and this takes a toll on me right now.   Here is a picture of my Gracie girl getting ready for her graduation.  She makes her mama proud.

I do have an apt. with my doctor next week to do some more blood work and see what we can do about the fatigue and bone pain I have been dealing with.   I know this is a side effect of the Tamox meds I am taking, but I really cant stop taking them.  So am I looking at 5 more years of this ?

The thought depresses me !  Big Time !

When people ask how I am doing, I say fine, great and smile and try to change the subject.  You dont want to admit there are problems, you just want to feel normal and you think by saying it that it will happen.  Sometimes it does, most of the time it does not. The fatigue and pain is still there and you just have to suck it up and move on.   This gets harder to do.      I had to talk to the powers that be at work about the medical issues I have been having,  Tthis was a big step for me, to admit this.       I dont think it will change anything for me at work, but I know this illness has changed me.

I am not the superwoman I used to be.    I need to find a way to slow down and take care of myself.  I know this,  I am just struggling with how I need to do this.

Stranded on a Sandbar

Back from vacation.  We went to Playa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres Mexico.
It was wonderful....very relaxing and a time to reconnect !

This song keeps playing around in my mind....I get it, I really do.

I enjoy this life as a jester
Seems to keep me moving around
Like the wind that blows, tides that flow
I have my ups and downs

All a part of this strange plan I'm sure
Start a new chapter each day
Honey, Love gets lost, time gets tossed
`Cause we both got our own different ways

I feel I'm stranded on a sandbar
Stuck in my tracks like a street car
Playin' it for all that it's worth
I'm just payin' for my sins on earth
Now I use to go crazy for days at a time
Now I'm takin my time with my days
Haven't found the answers like some that I know
I'm just stuck in fairly nice maze

Climb to the top of the island tonight
Sit beneath the cashew tree
I want to count the stars, lights on the cars
that are shinin' up and down on me

I feel like I'm stranded on a sandbar
Baby, I'm stuck in my tracks like a street car
Playin' it for all that it's worth
I'm just payin' for my sins on earth

I feel like I'm stranded on a sandbar
Sugar, I'm stuck in my tracks like a street car
Playin' it for all that it's worth
I'm just payin' for my sins on earth

I enjoy this life as a jester,
Seems to keep me moving around

Anywho - I promise to post some pictures and a trip report when I catch up with my laundry !

Where I come from is not necessarily where I belong.

8 months have gone by since I was told YOU HAVE CANCER.

Where I come from is not necessarily where I belong.

This thought has been bouncing around in my head for a few days.

A few of my close friends probably understand what I am talking about.

Cancer has changed me in so many ways and it made me reevaluate who I am and where I want to be.

We are talking about my life after all and how I will live out the rest of it. I know it is hard to understand – but the changes and the need to reconnect with my “former life” has left me with much to think about

As I drive to work each morning I pass my “ landmarks”

The hospital where I had my surgery

The hospital where I had my port surgery

My oncologists office

My surgeons office

My plastic surgeons office

The Breast Center of Acadiana where I was diagnosed

Rebecca’s where I bought my wigs and scarves

The pharmacy where they know me by name

My beauty salon where I had my head shaved

The medical supply store

The American Cancer society and Miles Pierret center.

It is like seeing everything in slow motion, with places and faces in front of you. Was this all a dream and how did it happen to me ?

I see them all and wonder if I will ever have to go through this again or am I truly “cured”.

Gracie is graduating and is starting the next phase of her life this month.

I have some major decisions to make about the next phase of mine…..…I plan on pondering them on the Isla of Mujeres in a few weeks.

I still need a major dose of energy….and I am fighting fatigue on a daily basis….BUT I am looking forward and I am grateful to be in a better place.

I have learned in a big way to let go of so many things and this has made me happy on so many other levels. What a gift this lesson was for me personally.

I am hoping that things continue to fall into place. I am REALLY looking forward to a visit with my plastic surgeon.

The Will of God will not take you where the Grace of God cannot keep you.

Making the most of a lunch hour

What do you do for your lunch hour ?

I try to schedule my doctor appointments so I can not miss any more work.    Today was my surgeon !  Check for reoccurance and check lymph nodes...and talk about mediport.

Me:  "When can I get my mediport out ? "

Doctor K:   What about now ?    or you can go into the hospital, get an IV, be put under and get it out or I can "pop" it out here in the office.  Your choice.  Most people do it as out patient in the hospital.  But that is not neccessary.  I can do it right here today if you want.

Me:  Will it hurt  ?  Cause I am a big baby ya know.

Doctor K: The numbing shots may sting.... but no worse than when they access your port.

Me: Ok lets do it...quick........ before I change my mind.

Doctor K:  You are a tough cookie - I can tell - this will be a piece of cake for you.

Me:  errrr enough with the pastry talk doc..I have not had lunch yet.

So I had "surgery" on my lunch hour !
My doc and I chatted the whole time...and it took 20 minutes max.
I never felt a thing...not even the numbing shots.......(this doctor is damn good)  and probably saved $$$$$$.
And no time off from work except for a lunch hour.

I think my tolerance for pain has changed for the better,  AND
I think my insurance company should send me a rebate or something.

Total office cost $300
Hospital cost 3-4K!

He said to expect some soreness in the next few days and told me to take some pain meds if needed.
It is pretty tender right now..but this is still   waaaaay better than going in the hospital.

And he told me I would have a very tiny tiny scar and he bet me  I wont be able to see if by next year.

But whooooo hoooooo the port is out :)  another milestone !

I love Doctor K- he is the best.

Life is better in flip flops

I am looking forward to a happy  life. During diagnosis and treatment from cancer you’re in a very dark place but there is light at the end of the tunnel…stay positive and never give up the fight.

Yesterday I booked a wonderful trip for hubby and I.
We have been married for 22 years - but together 25.   Celebrate every minute of it.
Hubby had tons of air miles so we lucked out and got a great flight..

We love Mexico and just cant seem to break  away from going there.
We have been all over Mexico and have done most of the tours and tourist attractions.
This time we  are going to a tiny Island called Isla Mujeres. Our mode of transportation will be a golf cart while we are on the Island.
I dont have the energy levels to tour or do any heavy duty traveling right now.
And one of the reasons we keep going back to Mexico is a chance for us to chill and relax.  Everything is on Mexico time, which is very different than the USA.  You also can go very casual - which is good for me because I dress for success (busines suit and heels) every single day.   No make up, a hat and some sunglases, shorts, t-shirts and flip flops !   *******sigh*************

I am so looking forward to this...promise to post some pictures and a trip report when I return !

Keep on Keeping on !

A few mis updates.

Had my monthly follow up with my Onc doc....
My counts are climbing and I am doing better.  Still have some serious fatigue issues...but they are getting better.  Work takes a lot out of me and by Fridays I am pretty much one and done.
My Onc said I was strong enough for recon surgery............. so I have an appointment with my plastic surgeon in June.  (he is a busy man).   Looking forward to some new boobs.  Sorry to be blunt...but it is the truth.  I miss cleavage.
I do have some scar tissue that is giving me issues...but I see my other surgeon next week and I will talk to him about that.

My hair is growing back...although my onc doc told me it sometimes falls out a second time.  WHAT ???  Most of the time I just wear my baseball caps.  It is really to hot for anything else.
I still wear my wigs to work.  But I am so looking forward to ditching those in the near future.
My Onc  thinks I am doing really well and told me I can get my mediport out ! This is MAJOR because he makes most patients leave it in for 6 months to a year.

I can wear Mascara again :)   My eye lashes are coming in long and thick and dark.  This makes me smile smile smile.  I deserve some perks from all this.

Hubby came home this week and will be home till June :)
It is sooo great having him around...he truly is my best friends and a great motivator for me.
We got up really early Saturday and went and did all of our major grocery shopping together.   He is in the kitchen chopping/cleaning up all the fruits we bought.

It is hard to believe that almost 8 months ago I started this roller coaster ride....I feel proud at how far I have come....I truly appreciate the good days and the little things so much more !

Out first watermelon of the season ! Delish!

Guiliana and Bill

I was under the weather this Easter weekend and watching mindless TV.
Giuliana and Bill ...one of my favorites.
As you may or may not know Guiliana was diagnosed with breast cancer....it was really a sad show to watch because it brought back so many of my own emotions.  I sat there crying through out  the whole show.   I am sure Gracie wanted to know whay I was putting my self through this.
But I became increasing mad and angry  as I watched it.....I wanted to scream..."what type of cancer did you have ?   why are you not having chemo if it was in your lymph nodes ?  ...I read your cancer was the agressive kind ?  "       Information - we need more information from you Guiliana.
Of course she has a right to her privacy.  I know that.     But if you are a celeb..and you are going to talk about it on TV and promote it..I think you should be upfront about it....Just my thought....SHARE !   All of us pink sisters want information !  It just irks me - you have a public platform and you can make this easier for all of us.   SHARE your information, it is so valuable to others who are going through this.

From my favorite breast cancer blog..."But Doctor I hate pink"

"If only days were like coin. If you could save them up, not spend them, gather them to use when you need them. I think of days I wasted. Threw my coins into something foolish, thinking there was an endless supply. I wish I could have them back."

Spend you time wisely !
Maybe I should turn the TV off !

Happy Easter

Happy Easter everyone.....

Easter is a time to rejoice, be thankful, be assured that all is forgiven so life extends beyond the soil of earth.
Byron Pulsifer

I have been in Gulfport Mississppi all week.   My first post chemo business trip.   It went well and I was glad to see all of my HR coworkers from Florida to Texas.

It was an employee relations meeting and to start it off we all had to get up and say our favorite quote and what it means to us.  Of course it caught me off gaurd....and all of us were scrambling to think of something witty.

All I could think of was:
"Don't sweat the small stuff, because it is all small stuff"

...except when I got up to say it I got all teary and choked up.  What ?  I never do that !  In front of my coworkers.......And at a business meeting at that. Everyone knows HR people never cry !
I said it is something I have learned in the last few months, to just let go and let God.   Everyone was kind and clapped and we moved on to the next person.  Everyone else had something witty or profound.

I talked to my HR friend from Alabama at dinner  and told her how mortified I was that I had gotten all choked up.   She told me - "Tammy, you did not notice it,but every one else was choked up with you, we are all so proud of you and are just in awe at how strong you have been through all this.......  and we are just so glad to have you back with us"

I am getting choked up again...I have some great work friends....but I still cant believe I got all emotional....cancer issues coming to the surface.

I am truly grateful for all the kindness that was shown to me by the people I work with...it blows me away every single day !  Our meeting ended late Wednesday and my boss told me to take an extra night at the hotel and drive back the next morning.  She knew I would be tired and she did not want me driving back to Lafayette late at night.   I thought that was kind and thoughtful.

I am counting my blessings this Easter....

I am still here

Weekly update !

Sorry I have not been posting...I am working some long days due to the recent merger and my energy level is dragging !

I have been battling some fatigue and bone pain – but for the most part still on the upswing.

If course I am back to working 10 hour days…by Friday I am ready to shut it off and watch TV.

I am sleeping pretty good at nights – for the most part I am in bed and sleeping from 8pm -6am

My two cats wake me up for their breakfast or else I could probably sleep a few more hours.

It does feel good to be able to sleep again.

Allen is still is back in Iraq for a few weeks....counting the days till he comes home.  For now
and it is just Gracie and I. We did go on a shopping trip and out to dinner last week.
I bought a beautiful dress and shoes for her graduation. Wow – seems like just yesterday I was taking her to Petite école sur la colline ! (her French preschool)    Can I just say she has been a tremendous help to me and we are both counting the days she has left at Saint Thomas Moore.  Whoo hoo college bond.     Can I  brag that she made a 4.0 on her last report card. I don’t know where she gets it from…but I am glad she has done so well in high school.

Next month is a flurry of doctor appointments.

Surgeon – check up/medi port

Plastic Surgeon – consult

Oncologist – monthly check up /blood work

Internist – yearly check up
I had a dentist apt and a dermatologist appointment but I moved them to the next month.
I can only take so much.
I have to squeeze in a business trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast sometime in April.
I always love going to the coast. It reminds me of going to visit my parents when they lived in Ocean Springs.
My job is in the processing of changing…in a few months I will lose the recruiting part of my job and I will   do employee relations only. Currently I do a mixture of both.    Not sure how I feel about that or how it will all work out but so far this new company has been   really good to me. I  Not sure how big my territory will be. Nothing like going there a merger.  But so far so good !  I am still here .
I have kinda learned with this whole cancer diagnosis – that whatever will be will be – kay sa ra sa ra
Cancer taught me - You take what life gives you – accept it, do the best you can and move on.
Dont spend to much of your precious time letting things get you down.
I see people stressing over small things every day…I used to be one of them. Now I tend to shrug off more and smile more.
I do have a low tolerance for complainers and I notice it more than I used to.
A got a wonderful letter from my former sister in law the other day. Can I just tell you – it was so kind, so sweet – that it made my week.
Take the time this week to write someone you know a letter or card and let them know how much they mean to you.
A healing boost a tell ya !
Happy Friday - I am still here !

What cancer can not do

What Cancer Cannot Do
It cannot cripple Love
It cannot shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith
It cannot destroy Peace
It cannot kill Friendship
It cannot suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage
It cann
ot invade the Soul
It cannot steal Eternal Life
It cannot conquer the Spirit.

Update from my atmosphere

Sorry I have been MIA.

Allen left last week to go back to Iraq L He got held up in Istanbul Turkey due to a major sand storm in Iraq – all planes were grounded.
So he is getting to see some of the city. I hope this is his last trip to Iraq – I do feel nervous when he is over there. He assures me he is safe…but still.

The weather here is South Lou has been really nice so I have been taking advantage of it !
Just being outside ………the sunshine is good for my mood and well being.
I am making up for lost time – all those months being homebound took its toll – so I want to be out and about.

I feel pretty good overall, still tired but getting my energy back….still have some nerve issues with my hands and feet.
I am dropping things due to the nerve issues in my hands…my poor cell phone took a dive and shattered into a million pieces. Gracie was able to put it back together and it seems to be working.

I am starting to sleep better…and I am off all feel good meds. I am very proud of this fact…I did it cold turkey…the first two weeks were kinda tough. But I am free of mood altering meds now.

My hair is really growing back to J I should be wigless by summer !

I seem to be tolerating the Tamox – I do get some wicked hot flashes….imy skin turns red and I get really hot on the inside, it only will last for a few minutes – then it goes away. I get them 5-10 times a day – I have learned to stay away from coffee and hot tea at work as that can bring one on.

But I don’t really sweat – so that is a good thing – just get really hot and red.

I went to my cardio doc to get my post chemo check up. This is to make sure the chemo did not do a number on my heart.    He did a EKG, Echo and a bunch of lab work. He suspects my electrolytes are still low from all the chemo.   He had his nurse call me two days later to find out where I got my heart mugga test done.    He wants to look at that as well……………….which kind of unsettles me a bit, but I should know what he is thinking later this week.
Fingers crossed and prayers sent.

My next lineup is a visit with my plastic surgeon, then my other surgeon, then back to my Oncologist for my monthly check up.

I hope to be able to get my mediport out next time Allen is home.

Can I just say I am so over doctor appointments and getting stuck with a needle.

Another friend joins the war

The cancer war.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Chris G.   Our husbands worked together and we had our babies at the same time.  I remember a Christmas party 17 years ago and trading pictures of our children and laughing about how they would all be friends one day !

Gracie and Zach !  Born very close together and now they go to the same school.  Both having to watch their mother battle the big C.

Chris was diagnosed with lung cancer (never smoked) - she is looking at chemo and rads to help pull her threw this.

I know she will be strong................ she will do it for Zach and Toddy...just like I did for Allen and Gracie.

Stay Strong Chris - we are pulling for you and praying.

Sunday and the green egg.

Today is the kind of day in South Louisiana that you just want to save in a bottle.

February and March are usually dreay and rainy.   Today the Sun is out - the sky is blue and the weather is warm...but with a hint of cool (low humidity) !

I think tonight will be prefect for grilling some shrimp and veggies on the Green Egg.   Allen got the Green Egg Veggie grilling pan as part of this birthday this year.

I have had a pretty decent week.  Slowly getting used to my new meds and getting out and about now that the weather is nice.

Hope everyone has a great week...dont forget the small celebrations along the way.

A Good Week

It has been a good week so far.   The meds are not beating me up and work has been very busy.

This keeps me busy and  it helps with my sleep issues at night !

And my hair is really starting to come back.   And it looks blonde so far :)

I have Allen, Gracie, and all my pets around me and it is almost Friday.

I am thinking about taking a Tai Chi class at Heaven on Earth, this is a really cool store in Lafayette.

Thought for the day:
"A life without change is not a life; it is a stagnant pool.
To change your mind frivolously is a cop-out.
To change your mind under the direction of the wisdom of the heart is a brush stroke on the masterpiece you are delivering to the world."

Thank you for all the comments - I enjoy reading them and they give me a laugh !

Don't be a baby

I grew up in the house of testosterone !  3 older brothers and all of their friends.   I was the baby and the only female.

My brothers would always tell me - "Come on, dont be a big baby"  !
This was said to ensure my silence so I would not run screaming to my parents about what ever they were involved in !  Oh the stories I could tell...I really should write a book or blog about it.

This was a catch phrase for me during treatment....it pushed me on.  If I felt any fear I would mentally tell myself - don't be a baby.  It served me well...I guess growing up around males made me tough and helped prepare me for this cancer battle.

I was supposed to start my new meds today...
I decide to start them on Saturday so I could be home if I had any strange side effects.
I dread taking them but they are supposed to help keep me cancer free and I will take them for ten years.

I gues I need to stop being a baby about it and suck it up !

Follow up Apt

First Follow Up Appointment

Went to my doc today – one of many many follow ups.
In a nutshell what my doc told me:

White counts are good - red counts or low.  Give it time because I was hit pretty hard by the chemo.
That if my counts come up in the next few months he will let me get my medi port removed (yeah) !

He said my chances of cure are between 85-90%  (that it will not return) and that without the chemo it would have been 60%.

He said I had the heaviest hardest dose dense chemo they give for this type of cancer and that I should be proud of how brave I handled it.  I told him a had good care takers and cheerleaders.

We discussed hormonal therapy and agreed that I would start Tamoxifen on Friday (wish me luck)  and ASSorted other meds for 10 years.    Here’s the kicker… There is absolutely no way to tell if my cancer is going to come back. There are really no tests to run, no indicators, nothing.   I just have to be aware of changes in my body.

Of course, I am to let my oncologist know if I experience any abnormal bone pain, pain in my calves, abnormal bleeding, difficulty breathing or headaches as these symptoms could indicate metastasis to my bones, lungs or brain. This is every breast cancer patient’s worst nightmare.  I think I have all of these symptoms NOW.....just kidding.  But really ?

I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it every day.  But you know what...I am not afraid.
There are no guarantees in this life.
When I talked to my friends about it, I explained that it was like background noise. It never goes away.

I read on some internet cancer blog that if the cancer does come back it does so within the first 2-5 years.

I will continue to be positive and brave.  I am still glad this happened to me instead of Allen or Gracie.
I will continue to blog about my follow ups and life on Tamox - so stay tuned.

A few of Gracies Senior Pictures...can I just say I love this little girl who brought me icees and took care of me when I was sick !

Happy Birthday Daddy

Happy Birthday to my sweet Dad.  4 years in Heaven, but missed every single day.   This picture was taken at my wedding in 1991.  He was a good man and a wonderful father.  He gave me my strong work ethic and he is one of the reasons I pushed myself to work during chemo.

My Dad was with me thru my illness...some of the stories are so  personal that I dare not share them...I am sure people would think it was the pain killers...or high fever.  I shared one of them with my husband..and he just told me I was very sick that night and running high fever.   Whatever !  I know.

I hope he is proud of the way I fought cancer and tried to be brave.  Complications from lung cancer took his life. I remember how brave he was and my last conversation with him.    My brother Chris and I were with him when he died.   That evening is etched into my mind...but as time goes on the pain is less.

"Love is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death.”

Happy Birthday Daddy..I love you  xxoo

Missing Mexico

We have gone to Mexico every year since 2003.   Something about the country feeds my souls as corny as it sounds.   People are always amazed when I tell them we go back to Mexico each year...for some reason they think it is a dangerous backwards country.  I tend to let them think that because I dont want any more tourists taking up my spot on their beautiful beaches.  Truth is ...it is safer than New Orleans and the beachs are waaaaaay nicer than any I have seen in the states.

Today is a crapped out day (meaning rainy and overcast/humid/traffic from Mardi Gras)....so I am looking at Allens airmiles and trying to decide where to stay and when to go.

My good frined Annalynne Bogner has booked all of my trips for me and has suggested a nice resort for me to look into :

Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita...you can google it or check it out on trip advisor..it is very laid back and very relaxing.  Sounds Fab right ?   wait till you see the pics !!!

This is Annalynnes web site for her travel agency:

http://www.lonepalmtravel.com/

She is a "Mexico expert" and always leads me in the right direction.   She is a dear friend and was very kind to me during this whole cancer ordeal.  Love you Shamalamalamalama.........(my nickname for her).
She is one of my fearless friends.   I know who they are now after going thru this illness.     I need to call her soon and let her book a trip for me so I can have something to talk about for the next few months.

Only In Mexico:

Got to love it.   I love mariachi bands.

I  had a prety decent week.  I got my first Mani/Pedi since September...it was wonderful.  I did a little bit of shopping and bought a nice pair of  Espadrilles and some "vacation" aka casual clothes.  I dont buy casual clothes because I wear suits to work and work out type clothing on weekends.
I still dont have the full energy to do a mall trip....but Kohls had some great deals.

My temperature controls are all messed up.  Hot and cold from minute to minute. The chemo threw me head first into menopause.   I will have to resort to taking sleep meds to get some rest.  Still have lots of  neuropathy in my hands and feet and some serious bone pain by the end of the day.  All things to talk about with my onc doc on Thursday.

But for the most part I am grateful for my new normal and having some feel good time now and then,

To acknowledge and receive love and abundance"

The challenge for all of us… To acknowledge and receive love and abundance and then put it back out there into the world."

I saw these words today and they really made me stop and pause.   How often do we overlook our own blessings in life ?

What did we give back today ?   Did we take more than we give ?

Make an effort today to be kind and put it back out into the world.

This reminds me of Allens Godmother Aunt Ruby.  She ended her cancer battle on Thursday - she was one of those ladies  who was truly a kind and giving person to the core of her soul.    She was an inspiration to me as I continue to fight my own cancer battle.   Ruby - I know you are home now.

A few quotes and a prayer

Women agonize… over cancer; we take as a personal threat the lump in every friend’s breast.
-Martha Weinman Lear Heartsounds

The use of tamoxifen can prevent breast cancer in patients who have no evidence of breast cancer but are at high risk of getting it.
-Bernard Fisher

Someone told me my chemo symptoms sounded like a really bad hangover! Their suggestion that Gatorade was good for hangovers led to my drinking gallons of it, which helped steady that queasy shakiness.
-Jane Vaughan

****** this really works btw********

I remember when you couldn’t even say breast, let alone breast cancer. Women did not say those words. That has changed quite a bit.
-Fran Visco

Every woman needs to know the facts. And the fact is, when it comes to breast cancer, every woman is at risk.
-Debbie Wasserman Schultz

During chemo, you’re more tired than you’ve ever been. It’s like a cloud passing over the sun, and suddenly you’re out. You don’t know how you’ll answer the door when your groceries are delivered. But you also find that you’re stronger than you’ve ever been. You’re clear. Your mortality is at optimal distance, not up so close that it obscures everything else, but close enough to give you depth perception. Previously, it has taken you weeks, months, or years to discover the meaning of an experience. Now it’s instantaneous.
-Melissa Bank

I didn’t know anything about breast cancer when I got it.
-Rue McClanahan

I have to admit, like so many women, I always knew there was a chance. But like so many women, I never thought it would be me. I never thought I’d hear those devastating words: ‘You have breast cancer.’
-Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Well, right now, technically, I have no breast cancer.
-Lynn Redgrave

Praying for a co-worker of mine who is a 15 year survivor.....she had to go back in for an ultrsound today.  Waiting for news is hard !

We need a cure !!!!  Not a race with lots of pink ribbons and TShirts !

I had a pretty decent week - still have some fatigue and bone pain.  I am working full time and by the end of the week I am pretty darn tired.   I have a four day Mardi Gras weekend...so I am hoping to rest up and enjoy being with Allen and Gracie.    I am getting peach fuzz on my head (yeah hair) !!!   I gave up putting on mascara - I have NO eye lashes any more.   I am getting pretty good at drawing on my brows !   I could have used a Wool Willy for practice !

A post from FB that says it all

"I am a breast cancer survivor and for all of you that think we are still alive because of the research that SGK has financed...think again.

My decision to withdraw support from Komen has nothing whatsoever to with what happened with Planned Parenthood.

It is because the controversy has caused me (and many others) to delve into their financials. Komen in 2011 only allocated 15% of the donations raised towards research...and without research there is no cure. 15%. Where did the money go? A good majority of it goes to education and "awareness"...a whopping 34%. We have breast cancer awareness month every October...we don't need our hard earned donation dollars to increase awareness.

It has gone to litigation and legal fees. Komen has spent over a million dollars in the past several years to prevent organizations from using the words "for the cure"...sending "cease and desist" letters to people using "kites for the cure" to raise money for lung cancer research, using "cupcakes for the cure", "mush for the cure", "bark for the cure" and "kayak for the cure". Komen has identified and filed legal trademark oppositions against more than a hundred grassroots organizations trying to raise funds.

They use hard earned donations to pay for lobbyists, for "overhead", for funding PAC's, for excessive salaries (and yes, I do think that those that work for nonprofits deserve decent salaries and benefits...just not 300-400 k )..and on and on.

We all want a cure for breast cancer..unfortunately research is what brings about a cure and you will not get that only giving 15% of what you collect to research.

For all of you breast cancer survivors that are upset because we are upset with Komen, please do yourself a favor and look into their 990's that are filed.

Me, I am now devoting my time to raise money for Army Of Women/Love/Avon, in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Breast Center and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer . Research is what will bring about a cure. You can sign up for the Army of Women and participate in research..they send you information on many studies happening right now.

As the science magazine "Discover" said this past week in their article:
"Komen for the Cure’s Biggest Mistake Is About Science, not Politics"

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/crux/2012/02/10/komen-for-the-cures-biggest-mistake-is-about-science-not-politics/

That says it all. Science~~Research~~is what is going to give us a cure.
